Because the NCAD is a recognised college of the National University of Ireland (NUI), its awards are validated by the NUI.

The NCAD is active in national and international research initiatives, including:

* The National Digital Research Centre
* The Irish Art and Design Research Network
* The European Art Research Network
* The European League of Institutes of the Arts

In addition, the NCAD is heavily involved in the Erasmus student exchange programmes with 65 international student exchange partners across Europe.
