PhD through Education

While the PhD through Education is normally by written thesis, the Faculty considers applications which employ alternative media. Contacting the College in advance of submitting a proposal allows discussion of research themes with staff. The Faculty of Education has a broad research remit in art, design and visual education including all levels of educational provision and is especially interested in encouraging innovative research approaches. The PhD thesis is typically 80,000 to 100,000 words in length. Recent Doctoral research in the Faculty of Education has been concerned with such topics as:
Drawing in the fine art curriculum.
Krishnamurti the holistic curriculum and arts education.
Visual arts in the primary curriculum.
Culture, collectivity and globalisation: performing community and arts in Ireland.

Current research work includes an investigation into the assessment of art in the state examination system, and an analysis of the experience of primary school teachers engaged in an online continuing professional development programme.
