The table is set.
The clock is ticking.
Let us begin.
My art practice encompasses themes of interconnectivity, which permeate throughout most aspects of our daily lives. I am interested in the interplay between the familiar chaos and charm of the domestic realm and the relentless scrutiny of clinical scientific investigation. The compulsion to look inside, to probe, to examine has always been prevalent within science and medical worlds especially with the vast developments in technology. It has now encroached into the food industry resulting in contradictory opinions and analysis. I am intrigued with hidden systems and mechanisms and how they work. Synchronization and balance lead to harmony. Every part, every job, every function no matter how insignificant they appear, has its own importance. Malfunctioning of one area rebounds and affects another.
Using the language of this technologically driven science and transferring it into an art context I investigate the everyday world surrounding me. My research has involved exploring a variety of environments. The work evolves in response to these spaces. They range from an intimate watch and clock repair shop, to a large-scale anonymous plant room of a modern sustainable energy building, to specialized units and laboratories within hospitals. I gather information and source material through communication, drawing and observation of the working methodologies and relationships while immersed within these different microcosms.
The work, Synchronization, is the culmination of this body of research and incorporates multiple video, sound installation and sculptural elements. The images of food in the work reference the lusciousness of colour of the Still Life genre. Humour is an important aspect in the work. It makes the indigestible, digestible.
